Swedish death metal left a massive impression on the metal underground because it both created a sound from intense distortion and d-beat punk swept up in primal death metal and also gave a voice to this music with a viewpoint that was simultaneously energetic, ancient, and anarchistic. Sabrewulf add to this a raw spontaneity and give it a different path.

Back in 1992 or so, Suffocation was the hot commodity and pretty much everyone in the death metal community wanted more of that sound. Ironically, it borrowed as much from Bay Area speed metal as death metal, using the percussive muted strum in ways faster than Exodus or Metallica could have imagined.

Finnish death metal wizardy guild Adramelech, together with Xtreem Records, published a compilation of all of its recorded material issued before the first album, compiled as a new release entitle Recoveries of the Fallen for those who like moody, oddball mid-paced death metal with a focus on atmosphere.

Belgian death metal battering ram Ancient Rites, who combined heavy metal with mechanistic and Darwinian death metal, have re-issued their debut album The Diabolic Serenades on vinyl via Soul Seller Records. Expect to find this one in your mailbox on July 17, 2020 or thereabouts.

Xtreem Music announced its intent to release the classic Adramelech demo “Grip of Darkness” on their Ten Inches of DeathCult series. A release consistent with the Finnish tradition as outlined by the mighty Demigod, “Grip of Darkness” bears witness to the brutal yet nearly clandestine melodic approach that would ultimately define the Adramelech sound.

Original Florida death metal act Massacre began working in the new style of death metal before it even had a name and in 1986, released a demo named “Aggressive Tyrant” which cemented the legacy of this band in the history of the death metal genre. Xtreem Records has re-issued this with a rehearsal from the same year on a new LP.

Before Immortal came to life, guitarist Demonaz worked on a hybrid of primitive death metal and Bathory in a band he formed with later Hades drummer Jørn Inge Tunsberg. Despite incorporating some modern metal ideas, Shezmu remains entrenched in the style of old school death metal and hardcore, focusing on simple atmospheric riffs that emphasize structure more than melody or harmony, sounding not dissimilar to Abomination, Miasma, or Baphomet but with more focus on bounding, energetic punk-style riffs.
