On January 10, Burke Shelley — bassist, songwriter, and pathfinder of NWOBHM-prog hybrid outlier Budgie — passed away in his hometown of Cardiff, Wales. A hybrid that sounded like Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad, and Yes in an infernal three-way, Budgie possessed its own style and vision of the world, leading to an enormous influence on much of metal and rock to follow.

The organization that was Absu before transsexualism destroyed it has been steadily moving away from songs in its works after The Third Storm Of Cythrául, with a brief jaunt into its influences with In The Eyes Of Ioldánach, but at this point it has become merely a riff carnival.

Making a rough but streamlined hybrid of war metal riffing and later thrash like SOD, Satanic Panic seemed to aim to capitalize on the recent resurrection of the 1980s trend of blaming “Satan” for every human stupidity, replacing climate change, racism, Communism, cults, and other bogeymen.

Coming from the Tolkien and Beowulf drenched aesthetic of dungeon synth, Druadan Forest shares more with the ambient cosmic acts of the 1970s and the post-black-metal soundscape experiments of the late 1990s, but aims more like a conventional ambient band for a circular but deepening mood.

Recursive percussive riffing dominates the leading riffs of this short EP while gurgling vocals provide a background rhythm and minimal digital drums keep pace, allowing Vulnificus to speak almost entirely through guitar and an overactive bass that adds some rhythmic depth.
