Entering the already crowded field of doom metal, Void Rot take a minimalist version of the glacial Skepticism or Thergothon approach and add a little more death metal and some of the post-rock open chord picking that gives atmosphere, creating a grating monolith of slowly moving sound which varies motifs as a form of texture.
Unlike music which navigates by changing riffs, doom metal tends to emphasize a single riff repeated until it lulls the reader out of any semblance of reality-consciousness, then builds on this theme with momentary counterpoints like the light of dawn before a storm rolls in.
Descending Pillars wields the raw sonic power of doom metal as an atmosphere and stacks contrasting moments of collision within the overriding theme, much like the aural overload of Incantation-styled death metal bands, but gives it enough light to leave conflicted emotions and an enduring sense of emptiness as the light fades.
