Solfernus – Hysteria in Coma (2005)

Solfernus succeed at what many bands did after the collapse of black metal, which was to reintegrate the genres of metal from the early 1980s onward into a hybrid style. In this case, they focus on the era of speed metal with black and death metal influences from the late 1980s.

If acts like Merciless and Necronomicron excite your pulse, this festival of speeding riffs will appeal. Using unique textures and building around their own vision of a mid-paced rhythm, Solfernus bash out songs which emphasize the power of the guitar, adding in rhythmic breaks and additional riffs to flesh out the theme.

In dynamics Hysteria in Coma really shines in that it knows how to keep a rhythm going without wearing it out, managing constant internal variation at the right points, even if some riffs may rely too much on dramatic rhythm. This albums has just been re-issued for a new generation of fans.
