How do you reconcile your political/philosophical/worldviews with artists you know are politically your opposite?
Artists that you love musically, but you abhor everything about them?
For instance-right or wrong-I love Tori Amos. From the moment I heard her first album. Loved.
I imagine she is a screaming leftist based on the little I know of her politics. And for some reason, that doesn’t bother me.
Yet I can’t listen to Celtic Frost/Hellhammer or support Tom G because he is such a little leftist douche. Everything about him is either hypocritical or just so left it makes antifa blush.
Now I was in 15 in 85 when I hear Morbid Tales and honestly, that band meant everything to me.
It shaped me. Yet now I can’t listen to it. I am not sure he’d even want me as fan.
I don’t know if I am being silly as old grown man.
Help me out. Is this something you even contemplate? I am sure there must be bands that have an agenda diametrically opposed to your beliefs. Do you still support?

Part of it is genre appropriate. Tori Amos writes jazzy folk pop for young twentysomething women. If she was not Leftist, I’d be a bit shocked, although maybe over time she has drifted over to the Dark Side.
I generally do not read lyrics or know anything about bands. I just listen to the music and think about it. I assume that most of my favorite grindcore and hardcore bands are fairly Leftist or at least libertarian.
Then again, when you are me… almost no one is going to match my politics, which are really philosophy, which is really culture, which is really genetics. Monarchism, eugenics, Half Earth, hierarchy, capitalism, a transcendent goal; few outside the nineteenth century can even parse that.
I guess with Celtic Frost and Hellhammer, I try to listen to them as pure sonic art and figure the lyrics are there just to enhance the mood and contrast. I liked Tom Warrior’s book, but his childhood sounded hellish enough that I imagine he will be alienated from humanity for life.
The FAQ tells me something very different.
The fact that Rob Darken once made a statement about Graveland having nothing to do with politics was a relief for me. Not that I personally care; I just find it tiresome to defend a band to people who only look at the political side of things. The question remains if that statement wasn’t hilariously too late and if only a handful of people ever noticed it

The distinction between “Burzum is to stimulate the fantasy of mortals” and politics happen as a side product of that vs. “our band is intended to specifically promote the policies of the NSDAP/CCCP/Democratic Party” is an important one IMO, and I’m not ready to throw shade at Darken for expressing where Graveland (and, I’d assume, Lord Wind) fall on this divide in an inelegant way.
Yes, art likes to stay out of politics, but art also delineates a perspective, if not a prescription. Art is philosophy, and politics is philosophy, so even though seemingly unrelated, they address each other.
Everything and nothing is politics. Since we’re in the supposed nihil-zone here, life is more or less what you make it.
(although paradoxically I don’t believe in free will because everything feels too staged to my well developed sixth rapist sense)

I think your definition of (prefered) politics is “pragmatism”, optimizing life and finding the most sensible solution to problems… but this sometimes becomes a religious death trap, because always remember the rule that you can’t have good without the bad. Perfection often means imperfection, because nothing is perfect.
You probably want something balanced, with just enough dirty in it, to make sense, like a fresh juicy asshole…

Let me tell you a listen secret, I don’t even fucking listen to metal anymore, and the reason is because they’re so bad that pop musicians do a better job.
For most metal bands, this is true. The caste system prevails:
* Thralls (90%/under 115s): repetitive labor
* Karls (9%/115-125): patterned labor
* Jarls (1%/125+): cognitive labor
About 1% of the metal made has a chance of being good. The rest is either B material or the 90% that is a droning clown show.
Minor pedantry — 125 IQ is about the 5th percentile, not the top percentile. The top percentile is >135.
It’s a little bit of a fudge because in point of fact, I am measuring not just IQ but “nobility” i.e. benevolent sociopathy. 1% is probably very generous for this intersection.

I was just reading the millionth op-ed by a woman complaining about the dating market. Successful women are settling for less and less. And they’re right. But it’s no wonder.
