Mayhem and Immolation are touring America together this fall.
American Hessians who want something to do should check them out.
New York death metal giants, IMMOLATION, are pleased to announce they will be touring the United States again this November in support of their critically acclaimed release, Atonement.
“We are very excited to announce that we will be hitting the road here in the States in November,” commented vocalist/bassist Ross Dolan. “We will be supporting the legendary MAYHEM from Norway, and along with BLACK ANVIL, we are looking forward to bringing a show that’s extreme and dark to all the fans. It is an honor for us to be sharing the stage with the band that truly pioneered the Norwegian Black Metal scene and can’t wait to get out there once again! See you all in November!”

on tour with a ‘trendy’ NYDM band.
Why is early Immolation trendy exactly? As far as I remember, Immolation was one of the most underground “big” bands of the 90s (as opposed to Mayhem who every other fat Goth kid seemed to be in love with). I really want to hear your justification; hear FfG while you formulate it and tell me how their sound then was in any way typical of NYDM as we know it. Try coming up with something more substantial than a showoff guitarist.
You also said somewhere that Autopsy is a terrible band. These are strong things to say, makes a lot of us feel like we’ve been royally had all these years. Please elaborate.
Yeah Immolation didn’t get really popular until around the late 90s and early 2000s around when Close to a World Below came out when they started touring a lot more and the excellence of the live shows sold the albums. Taking five years off between DoP and HiA hurt their popularity and DoP was out of print for almost twenty years unlike the other Roadrunner death metal albums.
Maniac is Marilyn Manson and Autopsy is 2 degrees removed from being Danzig.
hehehe nice name
autopsy could use some more crooning i’ll give you that
I have no idea which bands were what “in the 90s” as I was busy with other things during this time[*] but I’m pretty certain that no “fat goth kids” very into Mayhem before the so-called “Mayhem album” was recorded. And that’s not something I’d be listening to. I also didn’t call Immolation ‘trendy’, I was alluding to something else,
http://panzer.users5.50megs.com/articles/Mayhem/Slayerzine.htm
That’s obviously earlier and doesn’t mention Immolation (or Autopsy — I’d risk a bet the guy just made this up because “isn’t it all death metal”?) but Immolation sure seems to tick all the boxes, with a debut album cover drawn by a professional artist depicting sexualized dancing scene, shredding, ‘social awareness’ lyrics and recording with session musicians (“Our personal thanks go to Craig Smilkowksi for a job well done at such short notice” — Dawn of Possession liner notes).
As to Autopsy, I simply can’t stand this. I’ve listened to a few tracks from the debut and that’s essentially Death without the gay mannerisms. That’s obviously an improvement but the music remains simplistic and uninteresting. I’m also not the target audience for the prevailing topic, I’m neither shocked nor fascinated by it, and just experience this as (pretty transparent) attempt at provocation for the sake of provocation. I don’t much else because I can’t listen to this without forcing myself to it, there’s usually a “Why do I waste my time with this …” reaction within 30 seconds or so. Not very scientific or elaborate, just how it is.
[*] Like trying to learn enough about this confusing, scary and sometime outright evil world to survive in it without the stabilizing frame of well-known social conventions in the background most people take for granted.
Ok, so I presume you’re talking about Severed Survival, which itself is close enough in sound and intention to Scream Bloody Gore by virtue of era and personnel association. So what exactly is GAY about SBG? You sure you aren’t transposing latter-Death impressions onto a period in the band’s past? Because that would be most egregious of your German sense of objective propriety.
While on the subject of shredding in death metal, tell me how does an Azagthoth escape your condescension (assuming he does, of course) while Vigna is accused of being little more than a gratuitous pimp?
Autism is incomprehensible. Rainer despises Nailed to Gold as Vigna’s leads and solo are comprehensible.
I’m all ears to dissent, Daniel. But the guy makes do in the most flippant of ways…”Autopsy, Terrible band BTW”. BTW? What the fuck is that? Motherfucker, have we been idiots holding our dicks in our hands all these years? Present some reasonable articulation based on genre understanding, however subjective it may be, and I’ll respect you for having an opinion. Not this half-assed BTW bullshit. You run off on unsolicited tangents all the time, throw in a line in German that nobody gives a fuck about on a predominantly English speaking international forum, revise DM history as we know it, and you expect to be taken seriously? Get the fuck out of here.
ODB, my comment was directed at Rainer’s mental reasoning. I support your efforts to get through through all with thick skulls who hate Autopsy but buy wallpaper war metal CDs weekly.
This complete thread is nothing but an unsolicited tangent based on a completely unrelated remark I originally made which was about the (sad) travesty of Mayhem doing a “De mysteriis”-tour with Immolation. I didn’t even post an opinion about Immolation as band because it really didn’t matter in this context. I also don’t necessarily agree with the criticism in the interview I pointed at (someone bothered to look at that?), eg, Deicide is heavily “Bay Area”-styled at the surface so I understand the flippant dismissal (and admit to similar reflexes), however, at least Legion seems to be a good album (this means “I don’t own it, hence, I have no grounded opinion on that”). Not that this mattered here, either.
Mayhem is a band comprised of Euronymous, Dead, Necrobutcher and Hellhammer (easier to spell) which sadly didn’t release anything but a few bootlegs before faltering because of adverse circumstances and probably also, because half of the people were simply a bit too crazy. And this “fog machine and fancy light show” nostalgia outfit has nothing in common with that, at least not musically.
Where’s Count Grishnackh?
Cached in France.
I could have called them “Schuldiner narcisissms”, maybe you like the term better. OTOH, that’s less accurate because he’s really an object of devotion presented by himself for this very purpose, and the band/ music are just a tapestry for this. Death is Schuldiner pole-dancing on his fretboard.
My opinion on Immolation (or Morbid Angel) is a bit besides the point in the given context but I do like Azagthoths playing: That’s someone who makes his guitar talk. Vigna makes me realise that he’s a very talented and versatile guitar player. And this becomes, “Ok, I’m completely convinced, but I do know this by now. Talk about something else” quickly.
So Chuck Schuldiner was a stripper and Trey Azagthoth is the metal Eric Clapton? Have you heard Eric Clapton? Bog Vigna plays more like him Azagthoth.
I saw Clapton live three times (or 2.5 times as I sort-of got thrown out the first time for showing overt disrespect for Steve Winwood :->) but I don’t like much of what he recorded, either. Some of the really early things, eg, I have a Freddy King collection CD here which is mostly live recordings from some gig in England with Clapton (and George Harrison) sitting in, and I also like the “Derek and The Dominoes” live album,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdg5ereIsaI
but that’s certainly completely un-metal and all of this late 60s stuff was a pretty hollow cultural aberration.
I can’t describe this in the learned terms Mr ODB would consider appropriate for expressing “dissenting opinions” (insofar he considers any terms appropriate for that, something I wouldn’t bet on) which renders this a bit of a “describe colour to the blind” problem but Azahthoths playing is a bit comparable to the Bach organ piece which feature here a while ago in that its a story about a journey through a strange, wickedly beautiful and hiddenly sinister landscape. In contrast to this, Vigna (and Clapton, for most parts) ‘just’ play guitar. And the technical proficiency ends up eating itself it’s the expression and not the means of expressing something.
Something nice and primitive from a guitar player I value much more than Clapton (and the title fits in here, too):

That’s from about the time when Rory Gallaghers lifetime project to drink himself to death on stage had reached its zenith. Most of the later stuff is better left covered.
Smilowski was in the band for six years following that recording and played on their next album as well.
‘social awareness lyrics’, ‘sexualized dancing scene’? where the fuck are you coming up with this stuff?
also you might be the most autistic commenter on this site which is quite the achievement
What’s your opinion on what this depicts?
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mKDg9EjtQb4/TTzW6PJhdxI/AAAAAAAAEqQ/1mQ26La9gZA/s1600/Dawn%2Bof%2BPossession.jpg
I think it’s black (male) devils and white (female) angels, with the bottom-right group in a tango posture and the bottom left devil cleary ‘interested’ in a ‘commonly considered interesting’ part of the body of his should-become partner.
looks to me like the war in heaven.
are you currently on any medications?
“Did you stop beating your wife?”
The trick is a bit too old.
Creatures hugging each other (bottom right) or trying to grope each other (bottom left) is not imagery commonly associated with ‘war’. The ‘fallen’ (or in this case, falling) angel is also a well-known concept and it’s not “war victim” but “angel being expelled from heaven because of its sinfullness”, IOW, in this case, “giving in to earthly desires”. The ‘possession’ also lines up nicely with this.
Please feel free to supply an alternate interpretation instead of a boilerplate attack on people with a differing opinion that’s even rusty and dated for internet standards.
actually it was an honest question
It’s a shame Immolation became so trendy in recent years. Atonement is decent compared to their output since 2002, but it’s not very good and the Nuclear Anal Blast production doesn’t help its case any.
Mayhem should’ve stopped when Dead blew his brains out though.
Strange combination of bands…Gayhem.
Holy shot. We’re lucky enough in the year 2017 to have two of the most original and classic bands in underground metal playing on the same bill and the autists over in the DMU comments section are hard at work trying to provide evidence which backs up their spoiled brat, knee-jerk criticism. Please lighten up and realize how pathetic you are being.
please fuck right off and realize that the current incarnation of Mayhem is a carnival sideshow and Immolation plays far too much of their shitty recent material to make this tour worth the sheckels
That’s presumably of absolutely no concern to the entity you’re replying to as he’s hunting a different kind of deer. And – somewhat to my surprise, given the coarse means – quite sucessfully so.
That’s not the case. By most reports, bands are still putting on killer live shows, more so than many other older bands. Of course you actually have to leave both your basement and intellectual comfort-zone to be able to see it.
