Just finished a first listen through. It is at the very least superior to their ‘good not great’ album from 2019. This and Hyperborean Folklore are easy top contenders for album of the year. I’d personally give it to the latter but maybe this will grow on me more.

As a side note that music video for ‘Bringer of Sickness’ is pretty cringe. Would have been a bit more tolerable/funny if the actress had comically big tits.

    1. It seems improved on the 2019 album.

Doesn’t reinvent the wheel, just the way I like it.

    1. Agreed although I’d like a reduction in vocals-based speed metal content.

        2. Metal is guitar driven. When the vocals become the primary lead instrument (like on Slayer Seasons in the Abyss) every other instrument must be written to accommodate them, and the power of metal is lost. Lots of speed metal was terrible because it used pop song structures, fit the riffs to the rhythm of the vocals, and aimed at brain-reducing repetition to hammer home its beer drinkin’ toe tappin’ minimal appeal. Too many death metal and black metal bands do this too because it is easier to write one rhythm and melody then have the vocalist, usually the biggest egocase in the band and therefore the difficult personality that one must please first in order to get anything out the door, lead each song until it is time for each other egocase to show off at key points. Your average local band does this. Vocals and guitars are nearly in unison. Bass has a couple trills and fills here and there. A drum break precedes a meandering, sloppily off-topic to itself solo that shows lots of licks learned from videos on YouTube. Then the whole thing repeats. Almost all “technical metal” is this way — it’s a dogshit genre — but too many death metal bands fell in love with the chanty vocals and surging repetitive guitars.

    1. Anime, are those the cartoons of femboys with cat ears? Does not sound like my thing.

Have you noticed that Steve Asheim looks like a white Snoop Dogg?
