Every now and then we have discussion threads here for the community to express their thoughts. As we approach the end of 2014, many of us are busy with last-minute shopping for our friends, many of who are metalheads.
What are the essential albums of 2014? What about other recent (last five years) albums that have stuck with you and make you want to listen repeatedly? Or even metal memorabilia, paraphrenalia and other useful gifts for metalheads.

From this year I’d recommend The Forest Kingdom (Part 1) EP by the British band Hundred. (Their demo was a lot better, but I don’t think it’s widely available in physical format. Listen and judge for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvqL3TiTJUM) From the last 5 years I have the following suggestions:
1. Cromlech-Ave Mortis
2. Peste Noire-L’ordure à l’état pur
3. Atlantean Kodex-The White Goddess
4. Personal Device-Microorganismos del Mal
As for paraphernalia, bladed weapons are always welcome! (Guns are for cowards!) Nah, just kidding. Buy your metalhead friends Ride The Tiger by Evola or Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, so that they may lift themselves from their proletarian condition and become true Hessian warriors!
I don’t know if anyone of you listened to it but Impaled Nazarene’s Vigorous and Liberating Death was the best album of the year, at least for me. Violent and punishing black metal/grindcore only IM can deliver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDzLCxnfEEE
Store of the Worlds by Sheckley. Old school imaginative science fiction.
Best of the last few years:
Profanatica: Thy Kingdom Cum
Imprecation: Satanae Tenebris Infinita
Pseudogod: Deathwomb Catachesis
Demoncy: Enthroned is the Night
Praise the Flame: Profane Cult
sorry, i don’t give out gifts, just hugs.
just… BUGS
EEEAHAHAHAHA
Still have to check out that Sammath album. Is the DMU planning on doing a full review of the new At the Gates?
Some stuff from this year.
Music:
Demilich 20th Adversary of Emptiness boxset.
The upcoming Morpheus Descends boxset from Dark Descent.
Dead Congregation – Promulgation of the Fall LP
Gridlink (if they are into grind and can take the vox) – Longhena LP
Books:
Extremity Retained
Isten compilation
Glorious Times is fun.
Qvadrivivm Zine final issue.
Compilation of Death #3
2014:
Sammath’s Godless Arrogance for the true underground metal’s connoisseur.
Vader – Tibi et Igni for the upcoming listener just past gateway bands but not ready for the most refined tier just yet.
Distemtombed – Misery for fans of the brutal sound
Ripper – Raising the Corpse for those with 80s underground heart
Varathron – Untrodden Corriders of Hades
& Sorcier des Glaces – Ritual of the End; for patient listeners of slowly unfolding and not pounding Black Metal
will be back with more…
2014
Ian Anderson: Homo Erraticus
Soulburn: The Suffocating Darkness
Sorcier Des Glaces: Ritual Of The End
At The Gates: At War With Reality
Primordial: Where Greater Men Have Fallen
Varathron: Untrodden Corridors Of Hades
Swallowed: Lunarterial
Burzum: Ways Of Yore
Desecresy: Chasmic Transcendence
Judas Priest: Redeemer Of Souls
(Somehow most things from the last 5 years i listen to repeatedly aren’t quite metal.)
Summoning – 2013 – Old Mornings Dawn
Neurosis – 2012 – Honor Found in Decay
Manowar – 2011 – Battle Hymns MMXI (a re-recording)
Manowar – 2009 – Thunder in the Sky (EP, 2EP)
A metalhead must be at the vanguard of society. A leader, intelligent, rich, combat-ready.
So give him whatever develops him.
For example, a year membership in a mixed martial arts class.
this year’s metal:
Sammath – Godless Arrogance
Domains – Sinister Ceremonies
this year’s non-metal:
Michael Pisaro – Continuum Unbound
Toshiya Tsunoda & Manfred Weder – Detour
Jürg Frey & Radu Malfatti – II
Nicked Drake (Gareth Dickson) – Wraiths
Morton Feldman – Two Pianos and other pieces 1953-1969 (John Tilbury & Philip Thomas)
Three albums I like from this year (there were more in 2013):
Domains – Sinister Ceremonies
Corpsessed – Abysmal Thresholds
Heresiarch – Wælwulf EP
As for the previous years, this would be a list of what I come back to quite often:
Summoning – 2013 – Old Mornings Dawn
Pentagram Chile – 2013 – The Malefice
Zealotry – 2013 – The Charnel Expanse
Primordial – 2011 – Redemption at the Puritan’s Hand
Desecresy – 2012 – The Doom Skeptron
Obsequiae – 2011 – Suspended in the Brume of Eos
This year’s Sorcier Des Glaces, Desecresy and Dead Congregation were rather disappointing to me.
I still have to delve more into Primordial and Sammath before I form an opinion, and definitely check out that Varathron of which I hadn’t heard anything about.
Faceplant says new Sammath in 2015. So reserve room for #1 album in each year-end list.
