Borknagar sets release date for Winter Thrice

borknagar winter thrice
The bastard sons of Molested are back. Borknagar started their career as a melodic ‘viking’ themed black metal band, but gradually (under the influence of its revolving door of vocalists) evolved towards the sort of melodramatic, pseudo-progressive heavy rock music of their post-black companions like Arcturus and Solefald. Winter Thrice is allegedly going to hearken back to the band’s earlier days in some ways, but judging from the sample track released, this is going to be the same sort of musically proficient but sterile product so many other bands are releasing. It comes out on January 22nd, 2016, further adding to the barrage of upcoming releases in that month and on that day in particular.

First, I don’t think they were ever black metal at all, despite gestures to the contrary in the debut record; the leader once characterized his band as ‘epic metal’ (as per CM’s Firestarter compilation…) I believe the shift to ‘pseudo-prog’ was chiefly due to their drummer through 3 mid-period albums (and not the vocalist(s) ), who seemed to influence the music/message towards proggish-philosophical (as opposed to pagan/mythological) musings (think: extreme metal version of a Jacob’s Ladder-Natural Science-Chemistry-Mystic Rhythms thread of Rush) . Once that drummer left, though, nature and (nordic) myth seem to be making an albeit subtle comeback.

No. Do you ever hear a doctor saying to a patient initially reacting badly to their diagnosis of HIV+: “at least give it a chance, dude. Don’t be so quick to judge!”.

        No you don’t.

        1. jinko says:

How do you know that he hasn’t given the band a chance?
Why are you so quick to judge him?

You can still know what to expect based on the previous work of a band

  3. Smoking_Gnu says:

Their previous album Urd (2012) was a step in the right direction by employing powerful anthemic choruses alongside much smoother integration of the keyboard bits, as opposed to the meandering and relatively unengaging style they had been on since Vintersorg joined as vocalist. Doubtless it’s still too cheesy for some, but I rather enjoy it, especially the three-pronged vocalist approach.
