Swedish melodic death metal band turned melodic speed metal band At the Gates finished recording its latest album At War With Reality and plans release on October 27th in Europe and October 28th in North America via Century Media Records.
Vocalist Tomas Lindberg issued the following statement:
We are very excited to finally have finished this new album. An album that we’ve been working on for over a year now. It’s by far the most challenging record that we have made, but it’s an honest album and I think that you will feel that it is faithful to the legacy of AT THE GATES.
We have, through the process of creating it, been true to ourselves and our art. From hearing the first demos that Anders presented to the band last summer, through the extensive stages of songwriting, pre-production, rehearsals, recording and mixing, we now finally got the finished album in our hands.
We are very happy to have managed to produce an album that we feel is truly ‘us’. Something we can all stand behind one hundred percent. I can’t wait ’til you all get to hear it!
Recorded with Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman and mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, At War With Reality shows the return of the classic At the Gates lineup with their first new material since best-selling but fan-disappointing Slaughter of the Soul, which showed the band drifting toward Metallica Ride the Lightning era speed metal given the melodic Swedish metal treatment.

Noooooooo!!!!
Classic line-up? I still forget the name of Alf’s replacement!
I’d rather embrace reality, not start a war with it. The title is already indicative of a flawed spirit to this album. However, I shall await the first audio samples.
lol I was gonna say, the title is like they’re trolling anus
anyway, I think we all know how this is gonna turn out.
They may mean “reality” as most people use the term, i.e. “what other people think”
Yes. I think so. And they use this sort of wording even in The Red in the Sky is Ours.
Like waiting for poo to smack your face… in slow motion.
Well let’s not forget they did make one of the best death metal albums of all time. As far as I’m concerned there will always be a chance they hit on that same magic all over again and I know I’ll be there in support for when they do.
I agree. We should let them have a 100% fair chance.
I too am not inspired by the self-referential title and past recent history. Maybe this band will turn it around. If they want to really win in a huge way, they’ll make their classic and “weird” death metal in such a way that the fans embrace it. Let’s face it: pitching another Slaughter of the Soul and having it turn out popular is not surprising, but if they made a The Red in the Sky is Ours that hit the big time it would change musical history.
I have a feeling it will be like With Fear… mixed with the Terminal Spirit Disease hook oriented consonance. I doubt anything morbid will be found on this release.
As long as it is interesting. Too many metal bands these days are as interesting as car commercials and evoke similar emotions in the listener. “So shiny! So bright! I’ll buy it! 0% down!” versus an introspection creeping into the soul…
I’m just saying they’re probably not in an emotional state at this point in their lives to create something akin to The Red…’s “darkness”. So, as long as it’s interesting indeed.
great live band…
