Thergothon
Streams From The Heavens
[Avantgarde]
I was disappointed with this release after first hearing their demo tape.
The production on the instruments ruined what once was captured on the MC
demo; the terribly flat drum sound is the antithesis of what this album
should have been. Where did the utterly abysmal ambience go? Even hearing
the demo tracks redone on the cd was somewhat uninteresting. The vocals are
still excellent. The playing seems to be flawless, although very little
prerequisite technical ability is needed for this genre of playing...
"Streams From the Heavens" is very much akin to Incantation, especially
the album "Diabolical Conquest." The singer for Thergothon sounds
unmistakably similar to Danny from the Chasm/Incantation; those
abysmal/inhuman sonic growls that are SOOOO low. The music on SFTH is
really not that different either; the same doom founded structures abound.
Although the production on "Diabolical..." was not very good, they evoke
much more than Thergothon. I accredit this to a better idea of what the
music should sound like. If SFTH simply had some reverb and power put on
the drums, it would have been a great album. However, the sound is so flat
and linear that there is little opportunity for expansive thought. The
keyboards sound terrible as well; they are so weak and petty. Although
excellent music, again the production has limited it's possibilities. I
still recommend the first Morgion album over this, and of course the
Thergothon demo over this.
