Gestapo SS
Vinlandic Stormtroopers
[Clawhammer]
This cd compiles outputs spanning, I assume, the entire history of this
Vinlandic NS/Oi BM band, featuring, at least to a certain limited extent,
the drummer for Pantheon. Amongst those recordings featured, are the
"Breaking Down the Door" demo cassette, the "Kamerandenschaft" rehearsal,
and the split "Resistencia 88" respectively. Tracks 1-8 are for the first,
9-11 the second, and the remaining tracks through fourteen are taken from
the split.
In essence, it is hard to place a concrete judgment, or rather, analysis,
on all these recodings, at least all in one go of it, because they are all
so distinguished in themselves. The demo, as perhaps would be expected, is
very primitive, both in regards to musical expression and sound, and
consequently, I believe is probably my personal favorite of the bunch. Some
sections of it are faster, displaying a clear inspiration from BM, or even
early thrash, while, on the contrary, some are slower, and stick to a more
traditional aggressive OI sound. Although not being a personal fan, I still
find myself enjoying these moments, perhaps as they are constructed on
excellent "folkish", or even "traditional" melodic elements. The medieval
component to the music is exceptionally clear, and makes the demo very
interesting. Perhaps to further bring across this "cultural" message, there
is a Third Reich marching song which begins the album, accompanied with an
appropriate speech sampling.
Instead of going over the rest of the album individually, in the manner
of analyzing every separate contribution, I say instead that it is all very
similar. For the most part, the production is lacking, and therefore brings
to mind a black metal influence. Some sections of the album, are darker,
with regards to musical composition, while some, as I said, are clearly
based on a traditional OI structure. Occasionally, the drums will speed up
into a trashing beat, or, even more seldom, into a blasting style. However,
for the most part, the beat is what you would expect from an OI influenced
band; upbeat, but certainly not blasting in any sense of the word. I can't
help but here the influence, or perhaps just resemblance, of the band to
Aryan Blood, who, especially on the new split with Eisenwinter, sound very
much like G.SS, and also to "Angry Aryans", although in the latter case I
may be stretching just a little bit. Both G.SS and A.B have adopted a
similar very sound, building from BM structures, although complimented
further by traditional OI sounds, and then assembling the end product over a
lacking production, accentuated with BM vocal structures. In the case of
G.SS, the vocals, although changing slightly from record to record, are, for
the most part, "aggressive". Although they are certainly not singing, the
vocals are not, for example, like A.B's over the top tortured screams of
agony (for reference, check out the new split with Eisenwinter.) On the
contrary, perhaps like A.A's, although moreso, the vocals are just angry
screams of hate. Some are lower, almost in the realm of traditional death
metal, while some, as in the vein of BM, are higher, and more reminiscent of
screams. The production makes them harder to hear, and hence, harder to
really review accurately.
Let us take a moment in closing and look at the packaging. Although the
lyrics, and even the song titles themselves should leave no doubts as to the
political leanings of the band, even the slowest fool will realize this upon
further investigation of the packaging. The front cover is adorned with a
famous propaganda poster from the Third Reich, which I am sure many of you
have seen; an SS soldier striding bravely out to battle, helmet covering his
eyes, positioned in front of the advancing Panzers, and the mighty
Luftwaffe. On the inlay, we will find the words "Aryan Hordes of Hate
Gather for Attack", displayed over a military march.
All in all, this is most assuredly a political band, with a definite
political message to bring to their listeners. One will find this in the
lyrics ("you stupid fucking Jew", "Hail Timothy McVeigh"... hope I spelled
this right), the artwork (as I have just discussed), and the song titles
themselves ("White National Socialists", "Fist of the ZOG crusher") If this
bothers you, then you probably have no business buying this album.
One of this authors personal favorites as of now.
