Light Of A Dead Star
[Oaken Shield]
Excellent cd of French bm from the early days. Although these disks were
just recently distributed, the material is some seven years old, at least as
I have heard. Either way, this material is absolutely great either way.
The opening track is by far the best... and ultimately beyond the scope of
the rest of the album. The darkness produced on this track is just amazing.
Corven is a very promising vocalist, and his style seems to fit the style of
music very nicely. High pitched screams not unlike Emperor, but with a
sustain that must be heard to believe. Some screams are carried on for many
seconds on end.
Both the beginning and ending of the cd open and close with interesting
pieces. I get the feeling, along with the dedication "to the witches..." in
the linear notes, that these have some intimate connection to the public
burnings and humiliations of the heretics. One can hear flames, and shrill
sounds in the backround, which ultimately build an interesting atmosphere of
darkness.
The rest of the album, as I mentioned earlier, is sadly, not at all in
the same league as the first song. Whereas "Light Of A Dead Star ( what a
great name!!!!! ), was black and blasting, the rest of the songs vary in and
out; some are fast, others are merely slow doom pieces. The atmosphere
however, is still retained, and just for that I would encourage tracking
down the album.
Excellent cd. Truly some of the best material I have heard as of late.
