Perunwit / Kraina Bez Wiatru
Split
[Cicatrix]
Two old folkish bands from Poland playing dark ambient war music in a rather simple but dominant medieval setting. The tone tends to center around Polish history and mysticism, with a shadowy ancient sound and vague antiquated feel, although I can't really say most of this intrigued me. Perunwit are the better known of the two bands given that they share a similar ideology to Graveland and etc., despite that they can't really be characterized as black metal in the least. I'm not really sure what either side of this split is trying to go for here, but maybe the point is that the listener is supposed to generate their own feelings on that.
Perunwit - The material is slightly more interesting here than on the split with Legion, but it's absolutely smothered in keys (somewhat like Profanum) and sounds very fake. I experience very little emotion at all listening to this band and from my standpoint this is the significantly weaker presentation here. Perhaps they should attempt to become more abrasive.
Kraina Bez Wiatru - This has sort of an enchanting authentic sense as if staring into a fire in a dark forest, and Kraina Bez Wiatru quite successfully produce a memorable and traditional sound. Hollow bass drumming incorporated with some flute and tambourine usage also attribute to making this interesting but unfortunately the heavy synthetic resonance crushes a lot of that medieval atmosphere and one gets the feeling that that sort of kills the point. It stays grim throughout though and it does have several admirable moments.
I was hoping for a lot more from this, but maybe I just haven't gotten into it yet.
