Theatre Of The Macabre
A Paradise Of Flesh And Blood
[Root of all Evil/Demolition]
Supposedly this is a concept album about sin and sacrifice as perceived through the eyes of a serpent, although I think the only actual concept here is that this band are completely gay and should be shot down before producing anymore of this recent year European-worshipping symphonic bullshit that sounds like a bad (as if there could be a good) coalition of Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, and Limbonic Art. I had the misfortune of seeing these guys while waiting for Sarcophagus about a year ago and I think I had to subject myself to about twenty minutes of meditational therapy afterwards, because the dreadlock-equipped goth fag going orgasmic on his keyboards in conjunction with the 7-foot tall horribly weak vocalist pouring "blood" all over his face from a chalice equated to one of the worst performances I've ever seen. As if that wasn't bad enough, every time I surpassed the band later throughout the day they were standing around and yelling, "HEY, I hear THEATRE OF THE MACABRE are a really good band *guffaw
guffaw*" which was not only fucking pathetic but revolting to have to witness. At that point the tall one usually proceeded to bounce off with a crooked grin on his face as if preparing to frolic in a field somewhere.
Horrible melodic mid-tempos, abysmal classical interludes and "black metal" segments which sound like the worst moments of Dark Funeral lead the way through this long chunk of garbage. For all the excessive hype and promotion around this band, the production was average at best (at least for this type of music), although maybe everything was meant to come across so trite and stale because it's a rather good reflection of Theatre of the Macabre themselves. In comparison to the live show the vocals have become more raspy but also no better, the keyboards remain pretty static (terrible), and the overall imagery and mentality is sickening. Everything remains rooted in a moderate pace throughout and there are no clearly interesting moments.
A good exemplification of everything that is wrong with black metal today.
