This is by no means viking metal (although, that IS what they were going
for), this is straight-
forward black metal done in the style of early Emperor (ItNE) and early
Satyricon.. only with
viking influences thrown in.. this is my favorite cd from them, and should be
a must amongst fans
of this style
Vox - The vocals here mostly are a typical black shriek that is done very well.. full of emotion, very blackened... He occasionally does the "Viking" chant or "Viking" clear vocals-but they sound even more stupid than most of the bands who try to this.. but his black vox make up for it.. He is also one of the few guys who can pull off that "EVUHHHL" laugh.. WAHH HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA Nicely done 7/10
Guitars - The guitars here are very, very good.. Fast-paced, breakneck rawness with melodies thrown in.. occasionally throwing in good clean electric/acoustic parts.. not overly technical, but great nonetheless, very fitting to the music, and keeps that "I'm gonna chop your fucking head off" feeling througout Very good - 8/10
Bass - The bass is hardly heard here, but when it is, its merely used as a back up to the guitars, its played just as technically as the guitars, and holds down the rhythm well.. just wish more black metal bands would make more use of this instrument.. Nicely done 6/10
Keys - Keys here are used very rarely.. the intro is a nicely done piece that leads into the first song very nicely.. when they are used, they are used very sparingly, which is always a good thing Nicely done 6/10
Drums - The drums here are flawless (its Trym, what did you expect?), they are mostly fast paced and very technical.. but this is by no means just your standard blast fest.. he does many things to keep it interesting.. he is def. one of my favorite drummers of all time (mostly because of this album) Flawless 10/10
Overall - This is a very good album, as you can tell by the review thus far.. although they don't achieve any of the "Viking" feeling they were going for, this is a very war-like disc.. def. makes me want to take out my sword and start chopping up all my neighbors.. very, very good and very highly recommended Very good 8/10
