Mayhem
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
[Deathlike Silence]

MayheM...true legends would be an understandement...the name only will bring along alot of pro's, anti's and others for sure.

"De Mysteriis..." was the last album with Euronymous (Rest in Peace for some, Rest in Pain for others) on guitar and I'll have to give it to him, the man knew how to create evil atmospheres...listen to this album for further evidence.

After the death of Dead (who was IMO the true legend of Black Metal), Euronymous and Hellhammer (and Varg?!? heh) got Attila Csihar from the Hungarian band Tormentor to contribute on vocals...and I fully understand why some say his vocals ruin everything, while others hold them in reverence... they really demand time to get into...I eventually did at least. There's no limits to the man's vocals...he screams furiously at times, at others he whispers with a low-pitched voice and sometimes he shouts with that very same voice like a drunk madman...definitely worth listening to and most definitely SICK!

The main atmospheres on this album are, however, created by Euronymous himself. While definitely not the most technical guitar player, he had a way of transforming repetitive and sometimes simple riffs into pure, cold, darkness...the beginning of the also legendary "Freezing Moon" is the proof on this matter...a slow, brooding riff builds around itself and becomes the essence of malevolence poored directly into a song. Listen to this with the lights out on a fullmoon night...EVIL!!!

Hellhammer's drumming is truly magnificent! Utter brilliance! I'm really soon beginning to wonder whether there's actually something that isn't legendary on this album?

"Funeral Fog", "Pagan Fears", "From The Dark past"...and the title track proove why MayheM (once) truly were the essence of Black Metal...the lyrics by Dead are also magnificent...longing for blacker than dark nights, evil and hatred...should I say...legendary?!!

I guess this is simply one of those albums that should be in every fucking Black Metallers collection out there...

...the cemetary lights up again, as in ancient times...

9.5/10
