Darkthrone
A Blaze in the Northern Sky
[Peaceville]
This release needs no introduction. If you don't have this album, do not call yourself a black metaller or anything else, for YOU ARE NOTHING! Fuck off! There's no excuse for a self-respecting black metaller not to have this album! None whatsoever!
"A Blaze in the Northern Sky" was the first DARKTHRONE album that could be described as "True Norwegian Black Metal". This is grim, this is blacker than darkness and this is what unholy black metal was all about in the early days.
Songs like "Kathaarian Life Code", "In The Shadow of the Horns" and "The Pagan Winter" were genre-defining and certainly triggered the birth of the black metal movement in Scandinavia.
Grim & misanthropic black art. Uncompromising. I will not make a long and boring review out of this, because it wouldn't do this release justice. Do not even attempt to explain how EMPEROR's or SATYRICON's first albums were classics. Go fuck yourselves! This was and still is! Genre-defining and alongside BATHORY's "The Return...", the very essence of Black Metal.
AVE DARKTHRONE!!
