Sepultura
Beneath The Remains
[Roadrunner]
From 1989, their last good album (the one after, Arise had a few decent
songs). The boys from Brazil were called sell outs by some due to the
professional production (Scott Burns) and introducing a HUGE Metallica influence
(You tell me Inner Self isn't a ripoff of The Shortest Straw?!)
Fast Artillery/ Slayer-ish attitude was kept with Kreator/ Sodom influences
disappearing. Now in hindsight, a great blend of European thrash and Bay Area
melodic/ chugga chugga influences. Max Cavalera's vocals are brutal. While more
gutteral, his phrasing reminds me a lot of Rob Urbinati of Sacrifice (Torment
in Fire era).
Also a bit of an old Voi Vod influence is detected. After playing this to
death at the time and resurrecting it ten years later, it sure beats that jungle
nonsense that Soulfly/ sepultura do these days.
Last note. This was re-released one year or so later "remastered" though no one
could tell the difference. Was that a scam by the label to cash in on their
popularity?
