Festering Sore
Chlorine for the Gene Pool
[Unsung Heroes]

Ah, Festering Sore

Where was I? The reason I'm taking so long to review this is that I have a lot to say, and I'm usually writing about a song when the next one starts. So I have to keep backing the CD up, and I prefer to listen to it straight through. Over and over. If FS had only done "Mucous Membrane/Festering Sore", they would still go down in history as a great band. Luckily for us, they've done like 15. Theme songs are important, and this one rocks like a motherfucker. "Wanted: God - Dead or Alive" dispenses with the bullshit. Fuck. I was going to write about how the lyrics display a stark simplicity that is somehow very effective in delivering its message. Like "Fucking DEAD DEAD DEAD" at the end. FS is full of killer stuff like that. Much more effective than some abstract art piece. Plus the blast/riff is absolutely killer, not to mention the crunchy slower part.

Did I already say that none of FS's riffs or songs suck at all? It's pure festering horror. See, I'm already a song behind. 'Soap' is crazy. It's a slow grindy piece through and through, which helps set the mood for this tale of mandatory round-ups that could easily apply to any one of you. However, when singing about people being made into Soap, it's not exactly vox populi (?) to yell out "Ivory Snow, baby!" before a ripping into a nasty solo. It'll be interesting to see how this song is interpreted, eventually. Unless motherfuckers are too stupid to pick this record up immediately.

Any fans of 81-86(?) era metal will appreciate this as a modern classic. 'Satanic Priest' of course reverses the tempo, with another satanic blaster. Killer vocal hook, here, and the riffing is pure insanity. Fuck. Now I'm several songs behind. 'Human Cattle' is great, from the 'Fucked' demo. Aside from the extremely catchy everything, there are these nusto drum rolls and snare hits. And when you think it can't get any better, it changes tempo and outdoes itself. Possibly one of my favorite lyrics of all time "You stupid fucks all need to die miserably and slow/Down my throat and out my ass is where you're gonna go".

"The Entity" is another example of great song-writing. It sets you up with a catchy bass-heavy mid-tempo riff, then proceeds to take you on a rollercoaster of blasting and soloing. This is just a damn good marriage of riffs and lyrics. "Silent Night, Deadly Night" is probably the first time "Silent Night" has ever been played on a death metal album. This song is intense. FS somehow manage to make Satan Claus seem evil. More insane drum rolls compliment the chorus perfectly. Impressive, and it seems to be the counterpart to Spinal Tap's "Christmas with the Devil".

"Barking Dogs" reminds me somewhat of S.O.D. It's hardcore/metal like people just don't do right anymore. It's rather short (ever hear a long hardcore song?), but it segueways (sp?) logically into 'Dogcatcher', which is another medium paced song chock full of thick bass and guitar wank. Very cool shit. It talks about kittens being used for ballistic tests and things like that.

Goden was right. "Fuck a Dead Body" rules. This is the best necro song since 'Necrophilia'. It's so goddamn fucking catchy, you begin to wonder why it's not on the radio. Except Lance is singing "I love the girls who don't say no, they never do when you fuck a dead body/I love to nut in a rotten cunt", etc. The lyric snippet "rape the locks" lets you know FS aren't nearly as single-minded as some of their lyrics would have you believe. They're actually cultured!

"Terror Firma/Chlorine for the Gene Pool" is probably my favorite song, right now. It opens similarly to the first track, that is to say, it builds in tension, rather than just jumping into the meat of the matter straightaway. Damn, this fucking song drips hatred. I love it. It's basically about killing every one. The lyrics are dope as fuck, and the pre-chorus/chorus sticks with you like a bio-engineered virus. The bridge blows me away. FUCK, this is great song writing. It's borderline punk/metal, too, I think. Just fucking awesome, that's all.

"669" throws in a lot of Venom-isms to great effect. Damn, this could *be* Venom. And, much like Venom, FS use humor and rock to actually make a point. The point, to me, is that people get too hung up on being "evil", and forget to enjoy themselves. "Corprophagia" is just sick. I never thought eating shit could be this much fun. Stomach-turning. What a tightly-integrated unit FS are. "Cellar of Horror" is about Philly's Gary Heidnik. The solos in this song might be my favorite solos of the whole album. Brutal. The mosh part in the middle is brilliant, also.

"Evil Dead" is exactly the epic we were promised, coming in around 9 minutes in length. It retells the entire tale of the first Sam Raimi classic "The Evil Dead", complete with samples from the films. A massive undertaking, and FS manage to pull it off. They even sing about the arborial rape scene. This is something to smoke to. I really like the fact that this song is in no hurry to finish, yet it's not just a random collection of riffs. The vocal hooks/riffing is without parallel. This song really is worthy of the film, and that is saying a lot. Raimi needs to hear this...

"Die Motherfucker" is the final track, and is basically a summation of the entire album, and the FS philosophy. Again, this is hit song material, except it's so vile, lyrically. What a paradox they've created. Hats off to Festering Sore for this one.

There are so many good things I could say about this record. I really like to hear Lance shout out "thrash!" or "Ivan!" at key points. FS don't seem to be trying to please anyone but themselves, and they've managed to create an album for everyone in doing so. If you don't buy this disc (and some Rampage!), don't bother talking to me anymore, because you are too stupid to waste my time. And that's sort of the theme of the album, appropriately enough.

Criticisms? I have none. The 'Fucked' demo's version of the songs are perhaps a bit rawer, especially 'Cellar of Horror'. 'Corpro' skips a bit, but I haven't tried to clean the disc yet, and it's not a production/mastering problem or anything like that. Erm, there are two secret covers that I won't mention here. This disc easily stands on its own, so these two tracks truly are bonus material. Fucking buy it, you worthless scumfuck. Check out the mp3s at http://www.mp3.com/festeringsore to make sure you're not too much of a pussy to handle it. And then die, motherfucker. Die, die, die.
