Spaceboy
The Force that Holds Together a Heart Torn to Pieces
[Howling Bull]

Just damn weird. For those outside the U.S., this is probably virtually unknown; Spaceboy have attracted some acclaim particularly along the west coast of the States by playing alongside bands such as Neurosis. The Force that Holds Together a Heart Torn to Pieces (holy fuck) is some sort of odd metal/hardcore hybrid composed of dissonate time signatures, jarring tempo shifts, and cacophonous layers - not for everyone, but those considering themselves open-minded to this form of chaotic sound would do well to investigate, because it could be one of the most extreme releases you have picked up in quite a while.

Gutteral death metal vocals, a dual-wailing guitar massacre, and free-form jazz drumming. This 25-minute mCD features that ever-pleasant aesthetic value of being able to drone on longer than it "technically" is; otherwise, seek out the first full-length instead, entitled Getting Warm on the Trail of Heat. Spaceboy are fucking twisted, coinciding sporadic ferocious howling patterns with deep-throated multi-lateral speech segments. The Force that Holds Together a Heart Torn to Pieces relies heavily on discordant building patterns to create a suspenseful and unpredictable atmosphere; "calm" moments of buzzsaw guitar riffing intermittently pave the way for a coalition of instrumental vehemence. It took me a few listens to get into this, and several more to begin grasping all of the elements that exist, but it was well worth the time.

Recommended for those desiring something unique.
