Liar Of Golgotha
Ancient Wars
[Mascot]
Golgotha was the place in which the Christ was buried, according to the
Christian mythology. And guess who's the liar?...
Holland, the 'Nether Land', has never been a strong exporter of nor has
it been inspiration for too many Black Metal bands, though here were
born some of the better metal acts known today, such as Gorefest
(r.i.p.), Orphanage, The Gathering; Mostly, acts that produce melodic
and heavy Death and Dark metal, some of which even becoming classic in
the annals of the Metal bible.
So it's so very true, the band members are equipped with the most
unnecessary costumes, i.e., "evil" and "wicked" faces, totally
unoriginal corpse-paint, childish nicknames, but this charade of sights
and colors is only a wrapper which in its folds hides a metal treasure
second to none.
What's left at the core of the pilled wraps and layers, is an excellent,
mature and high quality metal symphony, complex and very much
interesting indeed, a piece of artistic effort which delivers to those
already fed up with the Black Metal trend - Yet another good reason to
keep on listening to this atmospheric sub-genre (although Lair Of
Golgotha's music is by far heavier and energetic than most B.M. bands!!)
because some time, once in a while, they will come across a mighty band
such as Liar Of Golgotha, and this they cannot afford to miss!!
L.O.G. exists seven years through its reincarnations, and this is the
band's second full length album, and the second that sees light through
the Dutch label Mascot Records. Mascot is a very underrated label,
unfamiliar to many, and it's a damn shame!
Mascot Records had drawn from its magician's hat some interesting and
superb albums, and it's nice seeing a label keeping an open mind when
dealing with quite extreme ends of musical styles; On one hand bands
like Ancient Rites, Creepmime, legendary Sadus, while on the other hand
progressive metal, jazz and blues. Interesting, ha?
If one is looking for a unique musical material, Mascot Records would be
an excellent place to start at.
Back to the Lair; A few eye-openers: The band consists of six members,
each is doing a very good job on his musical tool (including the amazing
vocalist!!), the members had only written the music, while leaving the
lyrics to be written by two very gifted writers: Angela Mayer and
Vincent Milhuisen, which managed to produce great lyrics, original and
beautiful, astral and royal, songs dealing with Star Wars (or was it
Star Track), H. P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon inspired fantastic tales and
some more abstract issues.
A good production, giving the music a crystal-clear sound, a full and
sweet effect and a great joy listening to.
Ancient Wars is an intriguing and thrilling album, built firmly and
having a song structure complexity of the greatest talent and
intelligence. Each track is a story of its own, and every tale is
composed of numerous shiny elements. Sometime spacious, sometime
classical keyboards, somber and sad cello, some Iron Maiden influences
here, some Alastis influences there, and the dessert: The last song is a
great cover to Exodus' Piranha (Bonded By Blood 1984, Music For Nations
Records), yeh you heard it right, a very cool execution of a great
Thrash song from the early eighties.
He who seeks something unique, qualitative, fresh and very melodic ( but
not sticky, sweet or commercial in any way whatsoever), can pick-up this
precious gem, put it inside his stereo, follow the lyrics as the music
plays loud in his ears, and I'm sure he will enjoy each and every
passing moment.
