Denial Of God
Klabautermanden
[HammerHeart]
The Danish black metal scene has been an area of interest for me lately, ever since I picked up the Feikn and Brandpest 7”s from Horror Records, a Nortt demo and this brilliant mCD in an eventful day last month. What with the Burzum-esque noodlings of Sortsind, the hateful malevolence of Demon Realm and the melodic panache of Feikn, it seems as though the Danes are on the up and up as far as black metal is concerned.
I’ve had the previous DoG mCD (why, the Ghouls Of Dog, of course)for quite some time now, and generally found that to be quite the contrived slab of unengaging semi-primitive black metal. But, recognising the potential for improvement in the transition period between first and second record (ie Zemial, dammit!), I picked up on the resurgent underground interest concerning this band and purchased this mCD, and by Beelzebub’s fine goatee, was I ever the impressed convert!
The sense of melody that was so prevalent in the previous mLP is still here in rather obvious doses here, but the material treads a more well-worn, old-school path this time around, particularly with the monstrously infectious Venom/Motorhead/Warfare-esque riff on their signature tune, “Black Horror Metal”. This track alone warrants an immediate purchase, with its rudimentary yet dandruff-loosening riffage and a slow, melodic bridge section that intersects the ensuing mayhem to great effect. “Dethrone The Tyrant-God” features a similar riff, but fails to capture the same intensity as BHM, which is, indubitably, Denial Of God’s finest moment yet!
Incredibly infectious old school black metal that incorporates filthy, goat-fornicating imagery, catchy rifferama, masturbatory, dissonant lead guitar magnificence, an inspired sense of melody and a sophisticated knack for songwriting is what Denial of God brings to the table. Nothing flashy, nothing particularly innovative or insanely individual, but flawless in its execution and thoroughly enjoyable. Apparently they’ve been dropped from the Hammerheart and are planning to release their forthcoming material through Azter’s own label, Horror Records, an amazing underground institution by itself. Buybuybuy!
[a fucking 10!]
