NON
Receive The Flame
[Mute]
NON's latest finds Boyd Rice to be in fine shape, albeit more subtle, which
actually adds to the beauty of this work. Easy listening has more than
frequently been a starting point for Rice's intricately layered noise-scapes.
The reasoning behind such approach is that deep within itself pop music is
capable of carrying more destructive potential than any extreme form of music
precisely because there is nothing shocking about punk, industrial or metal
propagating destruction. When, on the other hand, it's done by the means of
using pop or classical as an important building block for your work, that
could cause unexpectedly dire consequences.
On this particular release Rice allows the pop harmonies to shine through
much more than usual but with stunningly beautiful and graceful results.
Listen to "Spectre," "Solitude," "Monism," "Medici Mass," "Sangraal" and you
will see. Don't get scared by the word "pop," though. This music is as far
away from the conventional understanding of this term as possible. "Receive
The Flame" is still very much NON, and noisier pieces like "Alpha" and
"Omega" with their buzzing noise layers, or "Everlasting Fire" which oddly
resembles the sound of the rotating helicopter blades, insistently remind
you. More subtle it may be, but knowing Rice, the motivation and the message
behind this release are as subtle as a shotgun blast on a quiet, beautiful
summer day.
