Darkthrone
Soulside Journey
[Peaceville]
What first sounds like Swedish Sunlight Studios death metal, with consecutive
listens reveals itself to be a complex, cosmical and progressive (!) DARK death
metal classic. No headbanging or bulldozing, just discontinued, layered, almost
improvised sounding tempos and careful execution, with a purity of feeling that
reminds one of garages rather than fancy ”art halls”. At it’s time was the
trendiest, most popular and most regular DARKTHRONE album, up to the point that
the band themselves denied this album and the genre of death metal; ironically
today this comes across as the least commercial and least calculated one of
their albums.
