Blech. Maybe it's because I got burned out on prog music due to my early
days in my earlier (unnamed) bands, but this seems most guilty of the
problem that almost all prog bands face - seeming pompous and
self-important. Sonically it's a bit heavier than what most people think
of as prog-metal: imagine that 'chugga' sound of Pantera but with those
odd-time rhythms popularized by Dream Theater, overlaid with some
keyboards/pianos that range from out-of-place to downright annoying and a
vocalist that sounds like James Hetfield might sound if he tried today to
sing like he did back in 1984. But 'groove' just doesn't make heavy, and
it seems to undermine technicality. I don't know - to my mind the mix of
what they're trying to do just doesn't work the way they put it together.
For the popular metal crowd this is probably right up your alley, but for
us die-hards and underground junkies it just doesn't work.
