Amorphis
Elegy
[Relapse]
While their previous album Tales From the Thousand Lakes was a near brilliant, original record, Elegy doesn't come close to matching up to it.
The band has kept the original idea of Finnish folk melodies and lyrics, but added art rock keyboards, and a new singer who sounds like he's from the James Hetfield school of incessant braying.
Former vocalist, and still rhythm guitar player, Tomi Koivusaari does add some heaviness to the album with his death growl, but he is soon drowned out by new vocalist Pasi Koskinen's yodeling.
Despite the album's flaws, it isn't that bad. The music is still very interesting, complicated, and executed perfectly, however, I can not completely recommend the album since the band has gone in a clearly weaker direction.
Standout tracks: Better Unborn, Againt Widows, and Song of the Troubled One
