Old Mans Child
Revelation 666
[Century Media]
Old Man's Child has always been something quite unique to me, thanks to
Galder who is one of the greatest composers in Black Metal genre (note: I
count OMC as Black Metal), as he can play almost every instrument himself
and makes all OMC's music by himself.
In their newest album OMC has a completed lineup with some old friends from
"Born of the Flickering" times, Jardar and Tjodalv. "Revelation 666" pretty
much continues where previous album ended, adding maybe little more synths,
more complex song structures but still sounding good old OMC. For many
bands, increase of synths is terrible thing and usually fucks up the whole
thing, but not for OMC as Galder owns the wisdom how to use them. Usually I
don't like bands like this, using much synths and nice melodies, being mostly
slow- or mid-paced stuff... but somehow OMC does it better than anyone else.
Every album has something why you just keep listening to it, over and over
again. So does this. OMC's melodies are damn catchy, songs aren't too much
alike and song structures are complex enough for avoiding boredom at any
point. One negative thing is that I sense some too obvious influences from
Covenant in one or two songs, other thing is the text font that was used on
the albums leaflet which couldn't be anymore unreadable, but that doesn't have
anything to do with the music.. Overall with this album OMC loses much of
it's unique style.. having too much traces of Covenant (as mentioned before),
Emperor and maybe Dimmu Borgir.
Production on this album is superior, every instrument plays clearly and
nothing comes over another. "Revelation 666" was recorded at the Abyss
Studio and mixed by the master himself, Peter Tägtgren.
I prefer this for those who like Old Man's Child's previous works and all
who like catchy melodies and don't mind the synths.
