Sentenced
North From Here
[Century Media]
The 2nd full length from Sentenced is a decided improvement over 'Shadows of
the Past', with a more prominent use of synthesizers, and a bizarre, shaky
use of guitar melodies that is quite unique to this album. The groundwork for
this band's later melodic direction is laid here, although the album is still
kept within the definitive realms of somewhat technical death metal. "Fields
of blood, harvester of hate" and "Awaiting the winter frost" are excellent
tracks, and the rest of the album isn't far behind. There is a great
rendition of "Wings" here, originally from the 'Journey to Pohjola' demo in
1992. Taneli Jarva's vocals take over here, and are close to the style he
later utilizes on the landmark 'Amok'. While it still may not appeal to fans
of the more recent Sentenced style, this is the first album by the band that
I would truly recommend.
