Miasthenia / Songe d'Enfer
Visions of Nocturnal Tragedies
[Evil Horde]

Evil Horde's second release, and one of the better "atmospheric" black metal recordings available on CD. The packaging is just as good as the Murder Rape CD, with a glossy presentation, lyrics, photos, contact, etc. Although I must question the picture of the cat…

Songe d'Enfer are a band I'm familiar with, and this, just like the Miasthenia's side, is their demo placed onto CD. Burzum fans take note: SE are one of the few bands out there to succeed in producing Burzum style black metal. They don't concentrate on the rockin' bits like Forgotten Woods and other similar groups do though. It's all fairly laid back and keyboard driven, with Fog's remarkably similar vocal style leading the music. They speed up here and there, with lots of double bass, but remain very modern sounding. "Conjuration to Gorgon" is especially noteworthy, as well as the painful few minutes of the title track. Arghhhh- true pain and suffering become music during these last few minutes!

Miasthenia are a band I haven't had the chance to hear before, and they use their side of the split to present us with a quick intro followed by two twelve-minute songs. All the lyrics are written in Portuguese by the way, which is also rather unique. The intro is very pleasant and laid back keyboard music; both of these bands know how to use the keyboard without sounding idiotic. Very southern sounding indeed, and the music follows a fairly straight forward pattern. Heavy and somewhat typical black metal riffs, followed by the keyboards up front, the entire time led by the strong vocals. I was expecting some change during the lengthy tracks, but surprisingly enough, it never does. Thus, Miasthenia produce a rather typical and overdone 25 minutes, yet still stand above the "average" line.

Solid and a good part dismal black metal for people who don't mind a load of keyboards in their metal. Songe d'Enfer are especially good, and I could see the band coming up with a strong full length. And support the mighty Evil Horde regardless…
