Festering Sore / Rampage
Fucked / Doom Metal
[Unsung Heroes]
RAMPAGE
The only original track here Doom Metal is the best one. Slow,
doomy (naturally, duh!), evil, eerie. Fans of the first Paradise
Lost "Lost Paradise", Trouble's early work, Cirith Ungol, St.
Vitus will like this, but the cliche metal noisy ending spoiled
the mood. The cover of VENOM's "Leave Me in Hell" sounds
a little weird with the clear, ballsy Fang/Dr. Know-type vocals.
Last track "Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss", originally by
IMMORTAL sounds right on. Cold, brutal and fasssssstt!
It might throw some folks off how Rampage play many different styles
of cool metal, but this music is made by metalheads for metalheads.
FESTERING SORE
Damn heavy sound for a death metal demo. Opens with the doomy instrumental
"Mucous Membrane" the segues into the pounding "Festering Sore". reminds
me of SLAUGHTER's 'Surrender or Die" demo a bit, maybe due to the simple,
brutal song writing. Not so much as copying them, as next track "Cellar
of Horror" also reminds me of the DEATH demos too. The vocals are a deathy
version of Paul Baloff (Exodus), is this Lord Vic singing?
"Fuck a Dead Body" is reason enough to buy this CD! It's a classic! Slow,
pounding, with cheesy metal lyrics that only the Mentors in their heyday
could top! (Ignore those lamers Gwar).
Last track "Human Cattle" mixes slow and mid-tempo beats, a real song!
Just like the old days!
