Gorguts
Considered Dead
[Roadrunner]

With their debut LP (following their demo), Gorguts became rather popular in the death metal underground by fusing what was typical at the time (American death metal) with stronger melody structuring. The heaviness remained, but "Considered Dead" managed to avoid falling into the then 'hole' of meaningless, structure free brutality. Besides having one of the best covers to ever grace a metal album, the debut LP from these Canadians was one of the more solid death metal albums of 1991.

In comparison, the most recent "Obscura" absolutely shadows this release in terms of sheer genius. Everything is elevated to new levels on that truly modern sounding CD! On the other hand, the follow up to "Considered Dead" was more violent, yet less interesting. This is still noteworthy though.

The mid-pace of this album allows the entire band to play with various riffs and structures. The drums especially don't follow any death metal guidelines, as they rather nicely frolic and gallop along with the guitars. Each song is uniquely catchy in a way only done by the immensity of death metal, and because of this, is a great place to see Gorguts at their earliest. "Obscura" must be picked up first though to see them at their GREATEST.
