Absurd is familiar for most because of their ”murder of a schoolmate”, NS
statements and underground kult status. There are people who say that their kult
status is undeserved but for me, this band is larger than life. It represents
absurdity, immaturity, Satan and Wotan.
For those who have never heard Absurd, their trademark style is a unique mixture of very badly played primitive black metal with some epic clean-sung parts and also a distinct punk/oi/Rock Against Communism influence. In the demo era, this was also spiced up by tons of movie samples from cult horror and Conan the Barbarian (dubbed in German!), lyrics such as ”satanic orgy with my wife and friends” and songs about werewolves, vampires, living, winning and ”Black Motorcycle”.
If you see now why Absurd is KULT and appreciate it, go and get anything you can find from them. If not, I doubt there is any point in getting ”Asgardsrei” either, because this is absurd stuff! A masterpiece. It has been released as an mCD with five tracks by NC and as a full-length LP with eight tracks by Wolftower.
”Asgardsrei” starts with an intro by Rob Darken which sounds exactly like all Darken’s intros have sounded for half a decade. Epic synth ambience and battle samples, concluding into modern heavy artillery this time. It’s called ”Leben ist Krieg, Krieg ist Leben”. How true that is!
The first real song, the title track, is the ”hit” of this album, I’d say. Raw sound, INANE drumming, ferociously shouted/rasped lyrics with a very catchy and uplifting ”labour camp” tune in the end.
The next three tracks are the ones not included on the CD. ”Für Germania” and ”Tod vor Sonnenaufgang” are punk-rockish with unashamedly happy riffs and the third track is slower and darker, somewhat reminiscent of older Absurd.
Then, back to the CD tracks, ”Crux Gammata” is some sloppily played but incredibly powerful rock riffs alternating with some Hitler speech samples in the background. On the CD it sounds to me a bit like an interlude between the title track and ”Germanien über Alles”, which is the second last song and the song which definitely should become the German national anthem as soon as possible! It’s an over 10 minutes long ”epic” with a chorus-verse structure, impounding their nationalistic message by alternating between the rasps and the labour camp vocals, interjected now and then for an incredibly simplistic and tedious riff (it has been discussed, does this riff represent Hitler giving a speech or Hitler standing in his car with his arm extended while passing by the population) repeating for a minute or so until the next riff starts. The last track is ”Sonnenritter”, a beautiful, majestic layered synth tune with some whispered and shouted vocals, reminiscent of some keyboard work on Summoning albums, a fine conclusion to this album.
The mere act of you buying this mCD or LP and especially appreciation of it is an act of disrespect and evil against Jesus and Israel.
