This 1999 double-cd was recorded in Hamburg, Germany, 1998. I put off buying
this until now, as I just assumed it would have a shit sound or something. I
was disappointed in that Live at Brixton Academy thing. The production is really
good, but it still isn't like attending an actual show and having Lemmy's
Rickenbacker bass vibrate every molecule in you to kingdom come. This sounds
dirty enough to satisfy me and not turn it off. The song selection is good,
though I would have preferred more older material (ie.Bomber) but the band must
be sick of them. Speed metal songs like "Burner' or "Sacrifice" are not the
Motorhead we know. Sure, Lemmy, guitarist Phil Campbell, & drummer Mikkey Dee
prove they ca be heavier than say, Pantera or Metallica, but it's that dirty
rockin' groove we want, not just aggression. Lemmy could do a tour of churning
out covers of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Stones, and the Yardbirds, and I
know THAT would be something I would HAVE to hear and see, because no one could
do it better!
Tunes that smoke are "Capricorn", "Iron Fist", "Civil War", "Love For Sale", "Killed By Death", "Bomber", "Ace Of Spades", "Overkill".
I still think "Live at Hammersmith" is Motorhead's best live album, but this is still a worthy purchase, especially if you feel too lazy to keep switching albums on your stereo. Live albums are still kind of neat cuz they're sort of like a 'greatest hits' package.
