This album will be enjoyed or hated. Raw, primitive, fuzzy, harsh necro death/ black/ thrash metal. Sick, grunted, croaked vocals, and brutal riffs. Abrupt fade-outs.
Influences cited are Sodom, Kreator, Hellhammer, Iron Angel, and Celtic Frost. It shows, like "On Icy Plaines I Die" is slow and headbanging, "Nocturnal Spells" reminds me of early Frost, while the the most 'professional' song "Dwellers of Darkness" totally flies along as the double bass drums pound this into top-notch death metal. Fans of Morbid Angel, Destroyer666, Possessed, Armoured Angel after hearing this will be interested in the rest of 'Ancient Storms of War', even if the other tracks are different.
One reason why some won't like Gravewurm is the vocals following the riffs. Maybe to others it's amateurish, to me it's sort of neat, fresh sounding. Not many do it.
The production is flat out in your face, nothing fancy, and what I like are the short song lengths. "Cranial Splendour" has more of a deathcore feel, like S.O.D. meets Sodom, or like Chorazaim's old band Misery. "Cadaveric Dementia" sounds like U.S. act Festering Sore. "The Gorging" as well as in other songs has an off the wall pattern. Slightly punky. Makes me wonder if other influences include old Necrophagia, Slaughter, and the Plasmatics?
Other good songs are the doomy "Descend Into The Underground" and "A Once Forgotten Kingdom", the medium paced cannibal headbanger "Slaughtered On The Altar", and the upbeat Venom/Mayhem-like "Beneath The Moonfog".
A good mix of faster tunes with Hellhammer-type doom and heaviness. Cover art suits the material. Decent, fuzzy sound. No lyrics included. Limited to 666 copies. And yes, I also think the vocals on "The Dark Horde" suck.
