Tiamat
The Astral Sleep
[Century Media]

This is a brilliant although odd album. It already begins when you look at it, the cover is strange, different but still not venturing very far from normal. When you put the album on and get past the intro, which is better then most I should mention, then you can notice a quite odd sound, and also some odd music, but still without venturing to far away from what could be expected. The end result is an altogether strange mix of death, black and doom. It captures an incredible dark atmosphere, it sounds sinister, mysterious and on the borderline of insanity, but never crossing that border. There are a few rock'n'roll like passages on this album, they drag the overall impression a bit down, but they are few and far between so it still makes for an amazing piece of music, that by far is superior to any of their later work.
