Echosilence
Eclectic Collaborations
[Independent]

This is actually a demo, but the packaging and production are all so well-done that I threw it in with the album reviews. Once you hear them, you'll understand why. If you read the review of Echosilence's previous demo in an earlier issue of EFW, you know basically what to expect on this release. The band has changed a little, though. While Echosilence still retains the core of what its about (instrumental metal), they've taken a trip down Technical Jazz Avenue. Imagine what Death would be like these days had they taken Human the next step into jazz territory and fused it with some Atheist. Even the sound on this CD is basically identical to the production of Human, especially in the percussion department. This stuff is super-technical and the talent is overflowing. The softer parts help accent the more distorted death-y sections quite well and the absence of vocals lets one concentrate solely on the music. There's a lot of guitar noodling, but it's so "out there" that it ends up sounding good. The guitar melodies and hooks are easily memorable and the jazz parts are enjoyable, whereas I find myself laughing uncontrollably when I hear that wank-metal band Atheist.

Though there are only four songs, this baby clocks in at about 25 minutes, making it great for something to throw in when you need a break from the normal (heh) extreme metal barrage that rules your life (at least, if you live like I do). These wacky Estonians deserve all the support and success they receive. If you're looking for innovating metal, look no further.
