Zhelezniy Marsh vol.3
[K.T.R./Soyuz]
"Zhelezniy Marsh vol. 3" (Iron March vol.3) is a third installment in the
series of compilations featuring the traditional wing of Russian metal bands.
Unfortunately, the majority of the bands presented here are very average,
but now and then you run into some decent stuff. I will dissect them one by
one.
HELLRAISER: A sort of old school heavy metal with a nod to Metallica. It's
well recorded and played but lacks originality.
KRONER: Pretty good song, but hard to categorize. There are bits and pieces
from different metal styles, from hard rock to death metal. A couple of
riffs even reminded me of Dissection.
KORROZIA METALLA: One of the oldest Russian metal bands. They were featured
in the "Lords of Chaos" book, but not because of their music, which is a
frequently generic death/thrash mixture and has nothing to do with black
metal, but because of their extreme Nationalistic views and admiration for
Hitler. For this compilation they donated a song with a sound somewhere
between thrash metal and punk. The song sounds kinda funny because of the
vocals, which consist of choruses reminiscent of German drinking songs. What
this band is really famous for are their live shows, which include nude
female dancers.
D.I.V.: The song starts with a couple of ska-like guitar chords and then
transforms into speedy thrash metal. Not bad.
PHANTASM: A death metal band. They sound OK, but nothing to get excited
about.
BOSCH: I didn't know what to make of this band at first. Their song started
with a couple of metal riffs and then switched to clean guitar picking and
creepy keyboards. And just when I began to doubt this band's metal
credentials, they hit me with some semi-progressive death metal. Good one.
EPILEPSY BOUT: This band does a mixture of alternative and, so called, "new
metal" sound like Korn and all that crap. I guess they are pretty competent
at what they do, but I don't enjoy this type of shitty music. They are
definitely out of place on this compilation.
MORITURUS: A kind of death metal with deviations. Very lame too.
KPP: Old school hard rock/speed metal. Good song.
ZHELEZNIY POTOK (Iron Stream): Boring heavy metal with a few trash touches.
EXORCIST: Another death metal band. It's listenable, but, once again,
nothing interesting.
ADOLF CASTLE: Power Metal a la Blind Guardian and Iron Maiden. Good, driving
song.
Last thing I wanted to mention is that if you actually want to get this,
chances are that you won't be able to. I am not sure if K.T.R. releases are
distributed outside of Russia. You can try writing them though:
