Morbid Angel
Formulas Fatal To The Flesh
[Earache]
Well! That's more like it! This is the M.A. that I know and love. A lot has
happened since the previous album "Domination"...David Vincent (bass/vocals)
and Erik Rutan (2nd guitar) are no longer in the band. Replacing Vincent is
Steve Tucker (ex-Cannibal Corpse) and Trey Azagthoth takes on all the guitar
work alone. About the music: In my opinion the music here is a mixture of
M.A.'s first 3 CDs - the songs are played with that old school touch...fast,
brutal, some mid-tempo parts here and there, the relaxed keyboard parts, and a
whole lot of breath-taking guitar solos (Trey really gave the performance of
a lifetime on this album - he also wrote all the music all the lyrics and
did the production by himself). Same goes to the great Pete Sandoval for his
really great work (even though I don't know shit about drumming I can tell
this guy is real good, plus I've seen his face more than once on some
drummers magazines). The new guy Steve is a hell of a singer and not a bad
bass player...he doesn't sound like Vincent and that's a good thing (Morbid
Angel need a change after all these years). A lot of people were worried that
M.A. wouldn't be as good without Vincent, but Tucker is no less and
(according to some over the last 2 years) maybe even better with his deep
voice and beast-like growls...sounds really good. About the lyrics: I always
known that M.A. (and mainly Trey) are a Necronomicon influenced band, but
this will blow you away! Tons of chants and praises to the Ancient Ones...the
great thing is that the chant parts have translations to english so when you
read something like "Zamanu Muh lal-li zi-pa-gurud-Zuneme-E", you know what
the hell it is! Anyway, this is a superb release and once again the
standards has been set higher...buy it today.
