Autopsy
Acts of the Unspeakable
[Peaceville]
OK, I must say right away that I should not, by far, be the first choice for
reviewing death metal albums, but I ran across this baby in the "used"
section of a record store. Knowing about Autopsy's, somewhat, legendary
status within death metal underground, I decided to pick it up.
Obviously, never having heard Autopsy before, I can't compare it to their
other efforts. What I can say about "Acts of the Unspeakable" is that it is
a simple and straightforward death metal. The guitars alternate between
slow, sludgy, Sabbath-esque riffs, and very fast sections of almost hardcore
simplicity. The band also throw their weight around to demonstrate their
Grindcore roots on several tracks.
From what I know about the band, Autopsy were one of the pioneers of the
whole gore-metal genre, and, although, the CD sleeve is deprived of the
lyrics, the song titles, vividly demonstrate that.
Honestly, I didn't think that this album was gonna sustain my interest for
more than 10 minutes. Surprisingly, 35 minutes and 18 tracks later, I found
myself to be pleasantly disgusted and beat up. I think I am gonna keep this
CD.
