Neurosis
Souls At Zero
[Alternative Tentacles]
First of all, I have heard that people compared Neurosis to early Beyond
Dawn. Unfortunately, I never heard any of Beyond Dawn's records, so I can't
comment on that. What I do know is that Neurosis have their roots in the
Oakland's hardcore scene, however, they have left their peers behind a long
time ago, and "Souls At Zero" vividly demonstrates that. Although, there are
flashes of harcore's influence, primarily in attitude, to be heard on this
album, this is certainly a metal record. Lengthy, slow/mid-paced songs,
tribal drumming, heavy, stomach-churning guitars, occasional use of cello,
violin, flute and piano, apocalyptic lyrics, creepy samples in-between the
songs make "Souls At Zero" one dark record. Neurosis manage to create a
totally bleak world. This music is the sound of death slowly enveloping and
absorbing your weakening body and fading mind; the sound of the world dying
before your eyes - slowly and painfully.
This band, to put it frankly, is more terrifying with it's apocalyptic vision
than most of the "we are the most evil" type bands out there. Highly
recommended.
