Eyehategod
Dopesick
[Century Media]
"Dopesick" is a final album released by these masters of sludge, before their
break up, although, I think, there might be a CD of unreleased material out
there. Anyway, Eyehategod was a band that thrived on total hatred and
nihilism, and "Dopesick" is no exception. The album starts with slow and
painful "My Name is God (I Hate You)," which pretty much sets the pace for
the entire record. Mostly slow, tooth-grinding songs with a few speedier,
more hardcore, sections thrown in here and there for variety. If you are
looking for melody or beauty, definitely look elsewhere. There is nothing
pretty or attractive about this record. Ugly and hateful, bottom heavy riffs
are accompanied by agonizing, full of pain, screams. The lyrical content is
as ugly as the music itself, full of violence, bile and total despair. It's
amazing that Century Media chose to sign this band. Bands like Soilent Green
(which includes oneor two former Eyhategod members) continue to tread
Eyehategod's path today. Give this one a try, if you think you are man
enough.
