Disrupt / Destroy
Refuse Planet /
Total Fucking Chaos
[Relapse]
Disrupt is the band that single-handedly got my lame ass into punkified death
metal (and also firmly entrenched it in grindcore). Or should it be
deathified punk? Do you really care? I don't. I like to refer to
Disrupt as "death punk". They use the punk song-style (i.e. short), with a
dose of blast here or there,
and the death/extreme metal vocals style, with some screaming here or there.
I was surprised to find out that some members of Grief were once in this
band.
Well, the eight songs from Disrupt on this split (that was originally a 7"
of their own)
have a rawer production than the 'Unrest' album. This is a lot more
bass-heavy.
The music still rages, though. One ironic thing is that they abhor the
slaughter of
cattle and the eating of meat, but they have an ode to alcohol. Sorry, but
that's GAY (oops, pardon the
political incorrectness!1!!1).
Destroy is the more punk band of the two, but their stuff is still pretty
fast.
No blast, if memory serves, but that doesn't detract from enjoyment.
Lyrical matter is the
typical "save the animals" crap, but the lyrics are sometimes
unintentionally funny.
Then sometimes the lyrics are intentionally funny, such as in "We're Strong
to the Finish
'Cos We Eats Our Spinach". The production is fairly good, but the DAT tape
itself (or
whatever the band recorded the songs onto) sounds warped in a few parts.
Does it really
matter, though? Nope.
While Destroy is a pretty good band, but I mainly got this split for the
Disrupt stuff. Everyone must hear Disrupt. Go buy Disrupt albums. Buy
Disrupt.
Disrupt. Disrupt. Disrupt.
