Absurd
Facta Luquuntur
[No Colours]
This is not a real album but rather a collection of tracks from their old demos
and rehearsals. Someone un-TRUE might hold the opinion that Absurd is only
renowned because of other actions beside music, but my firm opinion is that
this album is an individual and worthwhile creation, even if it’s not at all
perfect.
Basically Absurd play simple metal with crude garage production. The production
is not the muddled and distorted extreme of Darkthrone or Ildjarn, but rather
the careless style of old punk bands, where the lacking resonance of instruments
brings a personal, unaesthetic quality to the music… there are no *effects* as
such. Everything is stripped down.
The playing skills of Absurd used to be quite weak and no fast or technical
parts are to be found here. In the simple riff patterns, one is reminded,
besides punk-rock, also of more abstract ambiental black metal, especially
Burzum. These simple chord combinations escape mundanity and the pointless
entertaining qualities of rock music by the serious and coherent nature of this
work. It is obvious that the songs are from different sessions and different
stages of artistic development, but this does not detract from the internal
connection between them.
The diversity reflects different sides of the musicians’ personalities in a
surprisingly profound way… in fact, this seems more like a personal collection
of art, than a work created to express certain ideas to the public. There is
something painfully honest in the adolescent patterns of alternating
self-pitying angst and hateful rebellion, represented well in the alternating
vocals, the generic Quorthon-like rasping set against simple, un-proficient but
very expressive clean vocals, where, if one sees through the obvious parallel to
punk-rock, there exists the tradition of Germanic folk music that is well loved
by these National Socialists.
"The Gates of Heaven" would be a good song to represent the essence of Absurd.
It is not "mature" in any way. It is not about images or creating music to sell
or even impress. It is pure and true. It is simple and happy in it’s freedom,
disrespect and lack of morality. After two listens you are forced to sing along
to the folkish chorus… "straight on through the gates of heaven, evil will
destroy their souls… where is your savior, where hides Jesus, why isn’t he at
war against us?"
