Demolition Hammer
Time Bomb
[Century Media]
Are you pissed? Well put in Demolition Hammer and enjoy. I was first
introduced to this band
by way of receiving a promo of this very album a few years ago when I was
just getting into
trading tapes. I was blown away by 'Time Bomb' then and I'm still blown
away by it with each listen.
Thus, it is one of my favorite records (probably #16 on my list). To those
who say this band sounds like Pantera, I say: FUCK YOU.
You don't deserve to listen to Demolition Hammer if you listen to Pantera.
'Time Bomb' is an album of the most brutal death/thrash unleashed in the
'90s. If you're at all familiar
with this band, you know Steve Reynold's has one venomous voice going for
him.
Derek Sykes' guitar work is great as usual (James Reilly's departure
sucked, but didn't seem to change the band), if not better. Alex Marquez
(of Solstice fame) takes over
drum duties on this record in the place of the late Vinnie Daze (R.I.P.!)
and lays all to waste with
his bludgeoning grooves. Overall, the band has slowed down a little in
their musical approach since
'Epidemic of Violence', but they got much heavier and angrier. The lyrics
are mostly
socio-political ramblings that I don't much care for, but sometimes it's
just fun to scream them along with
Steve. "Mindrot", "Bread and Water" and "Waste" just rage. Let's not forget
the all-out neck-breaking thrash of the title track, which is easily
the best song from the album. Their cover of Devo's "Mongoloid" was odd at
first, but they even made that song
listenable.
