Can you believe Earache, at one point, released original and amazing
death metal like Nocturnus? I understand that it's hard to believe with
all the rubbish they release nowadays!
'The Key', released in 1990, is probably one of the most overlooked, if not greatest death metal albums of all time. I've just come to this conclusion. With all they hype and rumors surrounding the fact that they are finally getting back together, I decided to go looking for this tape. After a few minutes of rummaging around in my closet, I found it stuck at the bottom of a box of tapes. Believe me, I'll never toss it into a box again! I must admit that I'm addicted all over, and if the band are in fact going to release new material, I can't fucking wait!!
The most important part about this release are the keyboards. I really wish a huge percentage of black metal bands would listen to this album. This is TRULY how you twist keyboards into metal music! They add such a feeling of depth and sickness that the sheer technicality of the music wouldn't be able to pull off alone. Listen to songs like 'Visions from the Grave' and 'Standing in Blood'. These (and all the other tracks) are fucking landmarks in terms of original and twisted death metal.
Flawless production, amazing technical skills, Satanic/sci-fi lyrics…..Nocturnus truly are fucking gods of death metal! 'The Key' is an album that must be owned by one and all! I can't fucking wait for new material!
