First self-produced album from this French band based in the area of
St-Etienne
(better known in the late 70’s for its soccer club than for its music),
and it
is really successful. Some members of Benighted are not really
newcomers, as
Fred was the drummer in Osgiliath, a (now defunct ?) Medieval Sympho
Black Metal
band which released one demo and a promo MCD in the late nineties (MCD
still to
be officially released through Adipocere Records).
Just imagine fast Black / Death, add a symphonic feeling to it (but made
only by
“real” metal instruments, no synths used !), 2 types of vocals,
alternating the
typical Black Metal voice with a more growled one (in the way of the
first
Cradle Of Filth album, but without that irritating high-pitched voice),
a tight
playing for all the musicians and some rare and inspired samples (nun’s
chanting, …) used as intro and outro. Quite an exciting cocktail…
Good compositions but with sometimes a bit “too-easy” melodies (it’s the
only
drawback but maybe I’m a little hard to please), that will be improved,
I’m sure
of this, in their next recordings. In fact, the third song Last Part Of
Humanity
is based on the most famous part of Carmina Burana. Don’t await a rather
indigestible metal/classical mix ala Yngwie Malmsteens, as the music has
been
totally rewritten and arranged to fit metal instruments. The drummer is
totally
wild on this track !
The lyrics, mainly in English (only the fourth track Nocturne is sung in
French), simple but dark and an excellent sound (some signed bands must
be
ashamed) make this album a real U.F.O in the 2001 French metallic sky…
