Death In June
All Pigs Must Die
[Leprosy Discs/Tesco]
Death in June returns with this 2001 assault. Sadly the collaboration with Albin Julius seem to have ended, instead the infamous Boyd Rice appear with backing vocals together with Campbell Finley (trumpet) and Andreas Ritter (from the group Forseti) with accordions and flute. With Albin Julius departure DIJ takes on a softer approach, kind of a return to the good old acoustic days of "But, What Ends when the Symbols Shatter?", this only apply to the first 6 tracks of the album though, the last 5, I guess, is best characterised as noise.
This is a strange album indeed. It features some of the best songs DIJ has ever produced, like "All Pigs Must Die", "Flies Have Their House" and "We Said Destroy II" but the noisy side of the album leaves a lot to wish for. On top of this the whole album seems to be one big attack on Douglas P:s former distributor World Serpent Distribution, earlier only criticised in the DIJ song "We Said Destroy". So while "the three little piggies" at WSD get their fair share of abuse the listener is served beautiful acoustic music with calm, and excellently performed, trumpet and accordion elements. Some of the tracks are clearly addictive and I have found myself playing this album over and over again. This creation comes totally recommended. But like I've said this only apply to the first 6 tracks. Well, be free to call me a lamo but I'm not a noise-man and the second half of the album does not do anything for me. It has its moments but even a lamo like me have heard better noise then this. The track "We Said
Destroy III" saves the second part of the album from utter failure but I just can't hype this part of the album even if I wanted to :). It's important to note though that I just might be to lame to understand the point of these 5 tracks and therefor might underrate them.
In conclusion: this album displays some of DIJ best work and is clearly worth picking up. It also displays (IMHO) some of DIJ worst work but this fact does not make this album something to overlook, the first part of the album is just to good for such a manoeuvre.
10 for the acoustic part.
4.5 for the noisy part.
