Thergothon
Streams From The Heavens
[Avantgarde]
How come no one bothered to review it before? On this very site people are
frequently referring to Thergothon whenever the subject of doom metal happens
to come up, yet one could only spot a single review of their demo. They
deserve much more than a passing mention. Although their recorded output is
very small ("Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothoth" demo and this full-length), it was more
than enough to secure Thergothon a permanent place in the doom metal
pantheon of the greats.
There isn't much I have to say about Thergothon that people who care to know
don't know already. We are talking about what was probably the slowest doom
band of all time, with the vocalist who could growl so low, it seemed like
his voice was resounding from beyond the earth itself. Their obscure,
ascetic and primeval yet epic sound would wrap your conscience in pure
darkness and self-oblivion and resonate deep inside long after the record was
over. If you ever seriously contemplated suicide but backed out at the last
moment, this would definitely help to push you over the brink and ease your
transition into another dimension in a highly exquisite way. Forget all the
feeble bands whose music is overflowing with gothic cheese. This here
sonority penetrated by centuries-old grief is what one can unreservedly call
DOOM at its purest manifestation. Needless to say, any doom fan worth his
salt should have this masterpiece in his collection.
