Bloodthorn
In the Shadow of Your Black Wings
[Seasons of Mist]

Apparently the person(s) behind Seasons of Mist are not in dire need of money. This is obvious considering how many CDs they've released in the last few years, and the packaging they've adorned them with. It makes no sense, since no matter how many CDs they've sold, there's no way they could have built this label up from scratch. The Bloodthorn CD is no exception. It comes in a huge colour digipak, and a specially designed CD, AND a large booklet. Was it worth it though?: NO!

The music is ok, on a technical level. The band know how to play their instruments, create some decent atmosphere here and there, and pull off a sound that's not far away from Gehenna. And as some of you may have realized, Gehenna can sound VERY boring at times. Obviously Bloodthorn have decided to take the more boring sound related path, since this disc puts me to sleep. I seriously doubt anyone could sit through the entire sixty minutes without going insane. It's just slow riffs, combined with slow and boring synth works, and generic vocals. Oh man is this ever boring.

The only decent part of the CD comes near the end of the second track. The music breaks out into a semi-depressing part consisting of female vocals and an interesting atmosphere. But get this: it then kicks into a solo. At first I thought this solo was quite decent. Until I realized what it sounded like. The fucking thing sounds like it was taken from the Moonspell "Wolfheart" CD!!! Yuck!! That's terrible!! What were they thinking??

Another negative aspect are the slut female vocals. Even thought they provide the only decent moment on the entire disc, they generally sound really quite miserable. Someone should shoot this whore, or at least force her to take singing lessons. While bands like Cradle of Filth have used their lesbian friends in the past to talk and add FAKE atmosphere, Bloodthorn sadly make their female sing. She should be in an alley on her knees, doing what she's probably good at, rather then whining into the microphone like the cow she is.

Overall a terrible release. I don't see why so many excellent bands out there are working so hard to even release a demo while bands like Bloodthorn release their sub-standard work in huge digipaks with massive promotion. Grab Fenriz, Isvind, Urgehal..maybe a few others, and let the death squads take Norway, since I can't stand the music coming out of there anymore.
